Intoduction to
Midwifery & Doula Certification 2008-2009 Program PARTICIPANTS OF THIS COURSE WILL BE ABLE TO: *understand the roles of childbirth assistants, prenatal, birth & postpartum doulas *identify potential members of birth teams and their roles *recognize the broad spectrum of opportunities opening to women in the birthing field *understand the attitudes and characteristics integral to successful childbirth assisting *identify physical and emotional factors that promote a healthy pregnancy, birth and postpartum outcome *realize the importance of the spoken word as well as body language in affecting outcome *recognize the unique emotional and physical needs of women during Cesarean, VBAC or birth with abuse issues *have an understanding of good nutrition for the childbearing year *know useful, natural remedies for discomforts common in pregnancy *demonstrate various exercises for pregnancy and the postpartum *demonstrate massage techniques that support a pregnant woman’s body *know safe and natural remedies for facilitating labor and birth *recognize the stages of labor and the emotional phases that are common in each phase *know what a woman needs in her birth in order for her to remember her birth positively *know how to support the father or birth companion *know how to support prenatal bonding and postpartum bonding *understand prenatal care and assessment *assess vital signs *monitor the fetal heart rate and palpate fetal positions *have an understanding of charting skills *have an understanding of pelvic exams in determining dilation and effacement *have an understanding of universal precautions *assist women and/or couples in preparing a birth plan *effectively assist labor and delivery in home, birthing center or hospital settings *recognize benefits of education, prayer, positive visualizations and affirmations *improve communication and counseling skills *identify birth and labor positions and innovative comfort measures *recognize common labor/delivery/postpartum possibilities, how to avoid complications, and how to assist in handling a multitude of emergencies should they occur *be able to assist mother with breastfeeding *recognize the importance of integrating the birth experience during the postpartum visit *identify normal newborn characteristics *understand & appreciate DONA’s Code of Ethics & Standard’s of Practice *understand the importance of organizing and coalition building *understand the importance of professionalism and ethics *effectively promote doula service to the community
