Introduction to Midwifery & Doula Certification Program
The Barefoot Doctors’ Academy
(BFDA), a non-profit organization established in 1983, is dedicated to
improving maternal and child healthcare by providing quality holistic
midwifery and doula education, with a strong foundation in
natural healing. While training kind and loving childbirth
assistants, we also teach
competency in the skills, art and procedures of birthing, general
natural healing, self-care, community service, education, and the
business of a doula practice. We recognize that a birth assistant is called upon
for many services beyond perinatal
care---such as a teacher, healer, head of household, elder, etc.
The academic sciences and
clinical arts are integrated in a friendly and kind manner while
addressing the spectrum of learning styles. The student is given
practical training, while also learning how to create an enriching and
joyful experience for all involved in the birthing team. Our philosophy is to
help develop the student as a well-rounded person and educator,
as well as an excellent birth assistant.
We are committed to exploring safe and respectful evidence-based
birthing options. By respecting birth as a fundamentally spiritual
event, we recognize that a peaceful birth leads towards world peace.
The midwife and
doula’s art is to facilitate this rite of passage with the clear
vision of a safe and beautiful birth and a supported family unit. To
secure the bond of motherhood, the childbirth assistant further inspires avenues of
proper nourishment and care through breastfeeding education and natural
techniques towards postpartum fulfillment. Birth is both a learning
experience and springboard towards patterns that continue throughout a
woman’s life.
In response to the growing
need for the organization of doulas on the Big Island, we are
facilitating a group known as DoulaCare
Hawai’i, which will serve as a support
group and referral service for a pool of qualifying doulas.
The upcoming 200-2009 Doula Certification will feature a
special Introduction to Midwifery.
